WHAT IS A MAST?

A Mast is a vertical pole which originally is used in Sail Boats and ships. They are primarily used to support the sail, a very long triangular flap of the boat which naturally propels the boat forward according to the direction of wind flow at the sea. The job of motor lies in pushing the boat forward along the direction of the bloated sail.
WHAT IS A MASTHEAD LIGHT?

A masthead light is a luminaire (lighting device) which spills white light over a very large area. The minimum angle of the spread of light beam across the sea is 225 degrees. There is also an inclusion of case when a masthead light spills white light at full circle, i.e. at 360 degrees. Masthead light is placed not on the head of the mast but at a height around 2/3rd of the total height of the mast. In some cases, the masthead is placed on top of the mast or head of the mast yet, it’s angle of full wave (light) beam remains typical to the one produced by masthead light.
FROM A BOAT TO THE GROUND
The Mast and masthead as mentioned in the above paragraphs were initially a part of sailboat. However, this concept was modified by lighting engineers to make the high-mast light pole. Note that ‘masthead light’ is the lighting device for the sea boat mast whereas ‘high-mast light’ is the lighting device for the street light mast.
HIGH-MAST LIGHT FROM THE MASTHEAD LIGHT
- Just like a mast for a sailboat, a long lighting pole with an average height of 30m forms as ‘mast’ of the light device, high mast lights.
- Similar to the masthead light, the high mast lighting device also specifies a constraint regarding full beam width of the light (Total angle of spread of the light beam formed). This full beam width must be at least 225 degrees across the sky.
- However, the difference in masthead light and high mast light is the placement of lighting device. The high mast lighting device must and should be placed at the top of the pole (in other words, the head of the pole).
- High mast lights include a group of lighting devices assembled in a ring or in a multiple sided polygon centered at and around the head of the mast (pole). The front face of the lighting device droop downwards i.e. towards ground. The masthead of the boat has only a single lighting device to effectively illuminate the dark waters of the sea
APPLICATIONS OF HIGH MAST LIGHT
- High mast lights are used especially in outdoor lighting with majority of the consumers belonging to the field of sports. The main reason for this lies in the extent to which the light beam is formed by the device. High Mast Light produces a strong and intense beam of light with the capability of lighting up an entire colosseum. High mast lights due to this property are used in those areas where huge lighting is required which mainly includes the outdoor lighting.
- They are widely used in stadium, work as field lights and are installed in public parks, playgrounds, large warehouses housing freight and goods. High mast lights prove better than street lights as they provide better illumination, especially in national highways and even at the center of the crossroad junction.
- For similar reasons, they are used in airport entrances to provide sufficient lighting to the passengers as they depart to or arrive at the airport.
- Outdoor public exhibitions and more big commercial sites have recently opted for installation of high mast lights as their lighting system, skipping other lighting devices such as light poles.
