LED street light is an integrated light-emitting diode (LED) light fixture used for street lighting.
The LED light cluster is sealed on a panel and then assembled to the LED panel with a heat sink to become an integrated lighting fixture.
Varied designs have been created that incorporate types of LEDs into a light fixture

Advantages of LED street lights

 

  • Minimum energy usage: Many LED lighting retrofits have been known to reduce energy consumption
  • Anticipated and Long lifetime: LED street lights usually have 10 to 15 years of life i.e. two to four times the life of HPS.
    ( Lifetimes are typically set by a decrease in luminous output of 30%. But the functional lifetime of an LED fixture is limited by the weakest link; associated drive electronics are typically projected to stay up to 50,000 hrs. It is hence understood that the LED streetlight variant hasn’t been in service long enough to confirm the projections). If this is clear then, in practice, less recurrent need for service or replacing the LEDs shall reduce its cost of maintenance.
  • Precise color rendering: The color rendering index is the ability of a light source to exactly reproduce the colors of the objects when compared to an ideal light source. Improved color rendering makes it easier to recognize objects.
  • Quick turn on and off: LEDs come on with full brightness instantly when switched on. Instead of the fluorescent and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, such as mercury vapor, sodium vapor lamps, etc. which take time to heat up on being switched on.
  • Immediate restart: LEDs do not pose a problem restarting immediately (hot ignition) following a brief power failure or inadvertent turn-off, unlike other lamps.
  • RoHS compliance: Even if LEDs get damaged they don’t release poisonous gases as they don’t contain mercury or lead.
  • Nocturnal insects are less attracted: Many nocturnal insects are attracted to ultraviolet light emitted by a lot of conventional light sources.
  • Optically efficient lighting equipment: LED lamp assemblies (panels) can send light in the desired directions without a reflector.
    While street lights i.e. fluorescent lamps and other lamps with phosphor-coated bulbs where the bulb itself absorbs some of the light. This is directed back down by the reflector. The reflector also captures the light emitted upwards from the lamp.
    The reflector absorbs some of the light. Then a glass cover, called a refractor, helps project the light down on the street in the required way but some light is wasted up towards the sky (light pollution).
  • Hence LEDs are more efficient with Reduced glare: as they Direct the light downward onto the roadway optimizing the amount of light that is directed into the driver’s eyes.
    Higher efficiency even at freezing temperatures: Fluorescent lights on average tend to have less inefficient light output in the winter temperatures.
